just in case you thought i’ve decided to switch jobs to become an insurance agent, my response is erm…no, but i can always introduce my friends to you if you’re interested.

on a serious note, i just wanted to quickly pen something about my classmate who recently returned to an extremely hectic school term after taking time off to attend to and recuperate from a surgery to remove her benign skull tumour. she looked better than i expected when i bumped into her outside the lecture theatre on tuesday: her head was wrapped in a nice black-and-white polka dot scarf and her hair was trimmed to a short, funky bob beneath the scarf. i do hope she can catch up with her workload after missing out on school for the last few weeks, poor girl.

throughout the semester, we had been going through the topic of medical negligence in great detail in our LAWR and torts classes and i don’t know if she had known about her condition all these while. if she did, she must’ve been the bravest soul i’ve ever met, since we found out (to our horror) that the law in singapore seems to lean towards protecting the doctors in the event a small risk from an operation eventuates. if another doctor skilled in the same area can qualify a doctor’s actions (be it in treatment, diagnosis or a failure to advice), the doctor would not be found liable and the patient would have to live with his/her condition for the rest of his/her life without any compensation from the doctor (i can’t emphasize enough the importance of life insurance here).

anyways, even though i’m not close to her, i really want to thank God that her 2-3% risk of bleeding to death from the operation did not materialize and she would not have to face the issue that some other poor patients did in trusting their lives with their doctors and surgeons and coming out of the operation permanently paralysed, blind or even dead in some rare cases, instead of being cured of the very ailment that the doctors were supposed to treat. of course, we need to bear in mind that accidents do happen and our doctors are nowhere near the hand of god. and as part of our transformation in becoming future attorneys, my friends and i are totally paranoid about seeking any form of medical treatment now (oops, sorry to offend those from my fellow medical faculty).

just a word of advice from what i’ve learnt so far in school to anyone seeking medical treatment, even if it is just for a simple cold, ALWAYS check with your doctor on all the possible known risks of taking the prescribed medication. if you’re about to accept your doctor’s proposal of going for a surgery, no matter how simple or complicated the op may seem to be, always make sure someone is around with you to listen to and enquire on ALL the risks (or as much as possible) with regards to the op to help you make an informed choice.

go the extra mile, and don’t take such trivial details for granted; it’s gona’ be worth it when it comes in handy, trust me.

the bruises of life

28 October 2008

well, it looks more like a big bloodclot to me…and no, this is not my toe, it’s my classmate, weibin’s poor big toe. think he might lose the nail since it looks injured at the cuticle and there’s a possibility he’ll never have a new nail again, but we’re crossing our fingers and hoping the best for him. be strong at the doc’s, my friend. :)

thanks for all the love to all those who read my last entry and freaked out on my behalf. i’m much better already and i guess everything shall remain status quo for now…

sorry for the lack of updates, pics on Ju’s bday celebrated last tuesday will be up soon when i get my first draft done for an essay that’s due this sat!

today my dad shared with me a piece of news which i never saw it coming this soon. but the inevitable has indeed happened and i was very shaken when i saw his sms while i was in school. i didn’t dare to cry. i told myself that i am a big girl already and i should be dealing with this in a mature manner at 24, yet deep down i can’t help but feel helpless about the entire situation.

i started questioning about my decision in going back to school and whether i should continue staying on. i left a comfy job as a manager and fought so hard to get into law school, putting up with so much shit in my last job at a law firm learning the ropes as a paralegal and a legal secretary, just so that i will get one step closer to my dream in becoming a lawyer. but at the end of the day, i want to let my family know that if they need me, i will be there for them, no matter what the sacrifice is.

sigh. :(

did you know that 70% of the world’s lawyers are located in america? i’m not surprised why they’re huddling up in ’sue city’. i think the lawyers there are having a good laugh given the types of lawsuits that they have to deal with…

- a lawsuit against God for widespread suffering and death. and surprise, a response submitted from “God” to defend that He is immune from some earthly laws and the court lacks jurisdiction. St. Michael the Archangel was even listed as a witness in this unexpected submission…

- then there was a man who was charged for battery because he farted at a police officer…

- a surgeon getting sued for “loss of service, love and affection” in cutting off a man’s cancerous penis that he detected while operating on some other part…

i have no idea how these lawyers pull a straight face in court! lol…
